Destination Wedding in the Cotswolds: A Planner’s Guide
If you’ve read my guide on getting married in the UK as an American, you’ll know the legal side of things is only half the story – the other half is choosing where. For couples picturing rolling hills, honey-coloured stone villages and a genuine storybook setting, the Cotswolds is very often where that picture leads.
Why the Cotswolds?
The Cotswolds is a protected landscape stretching across several counties in central England, roughly 90 minutes from London by car. It’s the England most people picture before they’ve ever been – thatched cottages, dry-stone walls, sheep grazing in wide meadows – and it photographs exactly as beautifully as you’d hope. For couples planning a destination wedding from overseas, it also has a practical advantage: it’s close enough to London for guests flying in, while still feeling like a proper escape from the city.
A Real Cotswolds Wedding: Blenheim Palace
Blenheim Palace, near Woodstock, sits right in the heart of what’s often called the Oxfordshire Cotswolds – the Palace’s own website markets it that way too. It’s one of the most iconic destination wedding venues in the country: a UNESCO World Heritage Site with over 2,000 acres of Capability Brown-landscaped parkland, and a genuine sense of occasion the moment your guests arrive.

Nicholas and Vicki chose Blenheim Palace for their Spring wedding, and it remains one of my favourite days I’ve planned. In their own words: “Thank you, Hannah, for organising such a beautiful wedding day for us! It was truly spectacular, and a day we will all remember forever.” You can read more about their wedding, and my full guide to planning a Blenheim Palace wedding, here.
More Cotswolds-Fringe Venues Worth Knowing
Blenheim Palace is the headline name, but it’s far from the only option if you’re picturing a Cotswolds destination wedding. A few others worth having on your radar:
- Thorpe Manor – a Grade II listed Georgian manor near Banbury with just 14 bedrooms. It’s a genuine blank canvas venue, and because they only take on a limited number of weddings each year, you get their full attention rather than being one of several that month.

- Aynhoe Park – a Grade I listed 17th century house in the village of Aynho, rebuilt after the English Civil War, with sweeping views over the Cherwell Valley. With 28 bedrooms, 250 acres and full butler service, it’s built for couples who want their whole wedding party under one roof.
- Heythrop Park – set on the edge of the Cotswolds proper, this 18th century manor house turned resort offers 440 acres, a spa and a golf course alongside its period charm – a good option if your guests want more to do across a full wedding weekend.
All three sit within easy reach of Blenheim Palace and each other, which makes this corner of Oxfordshire a genuinely good base if you’re weighing up a few venues before committing.
And you could just have your wedding in Oxford itself…
The team at Hannah Hope have planned weddings in other iconic Oxford venues, including in the stunning exhibition hall at the Museum of Natural History.

Choosing Your Cotswolds Venue
A few things worth thinking through as you plan a Cotswolds destination wedding:
- Exclusive use – many of the best Cotswolds venues offer full exclusive hire, meaning your wedding party can stay on-site rather than everyone travelling separately
- A weather plan – English weather is beautiful and unpredictable in equal measure; always have an indoor option agreed for an outdoor ceremony, whatever the season
- Guest logistics – factor in travel time from London or the nearest airport, and consider group transport if your venue is more rural
- Local suppliers – Cotswolds florists, photographers and caterers know these venues intimately, which makes a real difference on the day
